Tutoring
Struggling with certain subject material will most likely happen over the course of your educational career. There really is no reason to not ask for assistance when it is needed. Making the decision to ask for help with a subject takes you one step closer to mastering the material.
MATH: The math department offers a math lab for help specifically for the lower and intermediate level math classes. To brush up on skills or to catch up on a lesson they also offer video tapes and books available at the Education Media (LIBR 160).
WRITING: Writing is a skill that will be used for many of your college classes, not just English classes. The Writing Center offers assistance with any writing project. The following is a welcome from the director of the Writing Center, Michael Frizell:
The Writing Center serves Missouri State University by working with faculty, staff, and students on their writing projects. Looking for a second opinion on a writing assignment? Our tutors love working with students on all kinds of projects and are eager to give you fresh perspective on your writing. Our tutors are comfortable working with any step in the writing process: brainstorming, researching, drafting, revising, and research citation styles; however, they cannot proofread writing projects. Our goal is to help students become better writers, not to help our tutors become better editors.
We are located in Siceluff Hall 210, just north of Carrington Hall, and we are open Mondays through Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. All appointments are scheduled at the top of the hour, and appointments assure a 45-minute session with a tutor. You are welcome to walk-in for an appointment anytime we are open; however, walk-ins are not guaranteed a session. For a walk-in session, we recommend dropping by the Center on the half hour. You may schedule an appointment online (recommended) at http://www.missouristate.edu/writingcenter or by calling 836-6398. Should you have any questions, don’t hesitate to contact the Director by e-mailing MichaelFrizell@MissouriState.edu.
DEPARTMENTAL TUTORING: Most departments can help find a tutor if needed, sometimes for a fee. If the instructor has not provided details for you, regarding tutoring or additional instruction in the subject matter, request assistance from the department secretary.
Chemistry and Biology Departments do offer help sessions on a regular schedule, for more details check out the department website or contact the department secretary.
