STEP 2: Financial Aid
The cost of a college education can be a major burden, especially for adult students, because of the many financial responsibilities they already assume. There are several resources to consider to help finance your education. Federal and state aid are the largest sources of financing a college education, but be sure to utilize as many resources as possible and be aware of all deadlines for applications. To help you understand the jargon, check out the glossary of financial aid terms.
- 1) Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
This Federal form will determine your eligibility for Federal and state aid. Financial Aid can be very complex, given that each individual’s situation is different. After determining your EFC, the Missouri State Office of Student Financial Aid will calculate your financial aid award. Eligible students should receive an award letter from Missouri State stating the types and amounts of assistance offered. You must complete and return the award letter to the Office of Student Financial Aid in order to confirm your acceptance of the award(s). Students must maintain satisfactory academic progress in order to remain eligible for aid.

- 2) Employee benefits: Many employers offer the benefit of tuition reimbursement to their employees. Plans vary from employer to employer, from full time/part time student status to full/partial reimbursement. It is important to be aware of all details of the reimbursement plan and how it will integrate with the University’s billing policy. The University works with many employers in the Springfield area to help provide the proper tools for employees to continue their education. Some Springfield employers, like Paul Mueller, Northrup Grummon, SRC, and Cox Hospital want to provide the opportunity for their employees to continue, or begin their education.
- 3) Veterans Benefits: For details of the requirements to determine your eligibility for veterans benefits please visit or call the Veterans Services Office at 417-836-4615.
- 4) Scholarships: Scholarship money is not as easily attainable for the adult/nontraditional student but there are a lot of resources available to explore. Grades aren’t the only criteria used for issuing scholarships, and the sources of scholarship money are widely varied.
