It Really Isn't As Difficult As It Seems!

Have you ever said or even thought “I want to get a degree”? If you want to either start, or return to school at an age considered non-traditional, we want to assure you that it isn’t as difficult as it seems. All of the uncertainties that blossom from this first thought can be allayed simply by taking action. Of course the first step on your journey is to make the decision to begin the journey.

woman in classroomAnxiety is defined as a “state of uneasiness and apprehension about future uncertainties”. The thought of making a change in your life can cause a great deal of anxiety because of the fear of the unknown. If you have been “thinking about” beginning school, or returning to school, the anxiety you’ve been feeling is very natural. The longer you “think” about it the more stress you feel. It is very natural to fear the unknown; it is an innate emotional response. So much of what you would encounter as a student would be new or unknown to you in your current life style, so the anxiety you might be experiencing is, while uncomfortable, a typical response. You could very well be adding fears on top of fears by delaying your decision to get started. A typical reaction to any fear is “fight or flight”. Your “reaction” to all of this anxiety could be the beginning of a whole new exciting experience. Adult Student Services would like to calm some of your fears by giving you step by step instruction on how to get started. Isn’t that the crux of the problem anyway? Not knowing what to do, let alone in what order, shouldn’t be an excuse for not pursuing that goal of getting your education. Let us help you “fight” for that experience!

The following links are articles written by students much like you. They can be very inspiring for those that are just beginning or are returning to the university experience. If you are in need of that extra “boost” we hope that can get it from one of these.
